Vicopisano's Medieval Festival

The first edition of Vicopisano's Medieval Festival dates back to 1996 and in recent years the festival has grown in importance, thanks above all to the successful combination of Vicopisano's splendid historic centre and the effective reconstruction of themedieval environment by the organizers and by the participants of the festival.
Along the streets of the village and in the most characteristic corners leading to the top of the hill on which Vicopisano stands, there are "taverns" where the innkeepers offer frugal meals and "vino rubro" (wine) at will!
In the square in front of the 14th century Palazzo Pretorio, the famous medieval dinner is held. Food is served by attentive "servette" (waitresses), cooked according to the criteria and the recipes of the period and eaten according to the "etiquette" of the period: that means to not use forks and to follow a different serving order from our own. The historical research is careful and the reproduction of the dishes is faithful to the recipe books that were widespread in Italy in the medieval period.
What really strikes about this Medieval Festival is the magical, unreal atmosphere and the strong feeling of being continually suspended between the present and a glorious past, a feeling that the inhabitants of Vicopisano want to share with all their guests.
The festival is organised by the Associazione Festa Medievale Vicopisano.
A perfect urban context
The ancient village of Vico goes back in time to recreate the medieval atmosphere thanks to torches, many wooden constructions set up in the streets and squares, flags waving at every window, performances of medieval songs and costume parades and the forced exchange of euros for florins at the town's entrance fees.
The entire village is animated by shows, jesters, camps, battles, historical reconstructions, workshops and ancient crafts to better relive the atmosphere of the time.
A festival much loved by children
On Sunday afternoon, the festival dedicates a special programme to its youngest visitors: games, workshops, shows, entertainment and experiences of medieval life are reserved for boys and girls who want to discover Vicopisano and its medieval history.
