Walking or hiking? It's your choice!
Vicopisano is the ideal holiday destination to enjoy the outdoors: here you can go hiking, mountain-biking, horse-riding. You can venture into the woods to collect mushrooms or chestnuts, to look for medicinal herbs or follow ancient paths. It's ideal for anyone who loves geology, mineralogy and palaeontology, and for those who want to learn more about the history of the Earth and man, Monte Pisano's area is a veritable open-air natural and scientific museum. A place that is gaining importance as a destination for slow tourism, Vicopisano is spoilt for choice when it comes to be immersed in a wild and somewhat mysterious environment, where nature can be fully experienced.
Experiencing nature, walking and breathing: moments and activities on Monte Pisano, itineraries and walking trails.
The landscape of Monte Pisano, is an alternation of plains, hills and mountain ranges, rich in streams and caves carved out of the limestone. Dotted with small villages, medieval fortresses and Romanesque parish churches, it offers a surreal panorama that takes the eye across the typical Tuscan countryside to the sea and, on clear days, to the islands of the Tuscan Archipelago. And it is precisely the sea breeze that shapes the vegetation on the Pisan side of the mountain: from the low, modest vineyards, to the vast terraces of olive groves, ending with the high woods of chestnut, pine and oak. This natural richness has always made it a destination of inspiration for the great figures of history and literature, in particular: Dante, Leonardo, Montaigne, Goldoni, Alfieri, George IV of England, Luigi Bonaparte, Percy Bysshe Shelley, Mary Shelley and Lord Byron.
Festa Déi Camminanti (Walkers' Festival)
Culture is knowing our land, our roads, our roots. Culture is knowing the springs, the animal and plant tracks, the shadow lines. Culture is knowing what to do, how to do it, how to see.
Festa Dèi Camminanti (Festival of Walkers) has brought all this to Vicopisano and to the whole Monte Pisano: excursions, trips on foot, conferences on the trail, books, art and conviviality for young and old.
A festival dedicated to those who love walking over three days and more than one hundred events in the open air, among nature, in the last weekend of March, taking advantage of the first shy rays of spring with comfortable shoes and backpacks on the shoulders, along the routes that are never trivial and range throughout Monte Pisano and beyond (between the provinces of Pisa, Lucca, Livorno and Florence). There are also numerous initiatives that animate the village, including picnics, markets, street food and concerts: the ideal program for a long weekend away in Tuscany.
